When we increase running speed, there is an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) production by the body as a result of increased metabolism and breathing. During cellular respiration, the body burns glucose to produce energy, releasing CO2 as a byproduct. The more intensively the body burns glucose, the more CO2 is produced.
Furthermore, during running, the body needs more oxygen to fuel the accelerated metabolism. The body obtains oxygen from the lungs and transports it to cells via the blood. When we run, we increase breathing to meet the body's oxygen demand. This means that breathing also helps to release CO2.
